Blimey, who'd have thought it

Some good albums nominated for this year's Mercury Music Awards (Foals, I Am Kloot, The Xx, Villagers, Wild Beasts, Mumford and Sons) some very overrated albums (Dizzee Rascal, Shitty Clyro) and some albums I know very little or in some cases nothing about (Kit Downs Trio, Laura Marling, Paul Weller, Corrine Bailey Ray).

It was pretty obvious The Xx were going to win it and fair enough, I would've liked to have seen I Am Kloot win it but that's just my opinion, I'm just relieved that Clyro or Dizzee didn't win it as I find both acts vastly overrated.

Several albums released over the past 12 months that I felt could've more than held their own in that final list of nominees as well (from the likes of the F**k Buttons, The Fall, These New Puritans, Stornoway, Field Music, Pulled Apart By Horses, The Cribs) but it's just a competition and hopefully what it will do is raise the profile of the likes of I Am Kloot, Laura Marling, Wild Beasts and help them.

I would still question the validity of a prize that was once awarded to M People (way back in 1994, they were terrible times)

did you just say that the mumford and sons album is good?

jesus christ.

I feel good about the xx winning. a good choice.

Wild Beasts hurt my ears a bit. i probably would have nominated these new puritans.

Reply to Post 70478 by MarkEMoon in Mercury Prize It's decided by a panel of judges

The Xx are 3 (formerly 4) grumpy 20-somethings from London, their album is pretty good, skeletal guitar lines, programmed drums, basslines half inched from The Cure, boy/girl vocals.

I have to take issue with that! they arent grumpy at all, theyre very nice people.. just really shy. not traditional band types.

Oops! My bad : )

If you ran a poll on this forum and everybody nominated a winner I suspect there would be at least 50 different artists/bands on the list. That's the beauty of music for me; so much about and so so varied. Brilliant.

Wouldn't it be boring if we all liked the same stuff : (

Sorry Boz, didn't mean to offend, I like The Xx, I think they've made a good debut album, I suspect they will go on to make even better records.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with being grumpy, I've been grumpy for 38 years

Now't wrong with Mumford and Sons

These New Puritans "Hidden" was a brave and challenging album to make and I think it should've been on the shortlist.

Back in 2008 I started compiling the "albums of 2008" as voted for by Swindon Music Forum members (there was a thread on here prob around October 2008 time) with the intention of playing a track from each of the top 20 albums of 2008 as voted for by SMF members at the Music Quiz I run at The Vic just before Christmas each year.

I did tally the votes up and still have the results saved on my laptop

Interestingly enough in 2008 the most popular album was a joint tie between Vampire Weekend's self titled debut and The Gaslight Anthem's "59 Sound", following not far behind was Elbow's "Seldom Seen Kid" then about 16 albums all tied on joint 4th place (inc TV On The Radio, Fleet Foxes, Rise Against, Portishead, Deathcab for Cutie, The Hold Steady and Neon Neon).

I might see if we can get a reasonable response to a "Best Album of 2010" thread this year and play the top 20 at this year's quiz.

On a similar theme I also compiled people's votes for the best albums of the past decade late last year, again there were a lot of albums which only got one vote, the album which attracted the most votes was At The Drive In's "Relationship Of Command"

: )

I do quite like the idea of having an end of year poll on here for people to vote for their most favourite albums of the year, I'd say songs but I suspect we'd end up with about 400 songs all with one vote, albums is a bit easier to calculate, I'd love to be able to present the top 20 at the Music Quiz (Dec 19th at The Vic... PLUG PLUG PLUG)

The previous "albums of the year" threads have turned up some interesting results, the albums of the decade thread was responsible for me discovering the rather fantastic "The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place" by Explosions In The Sky

The two best things about this forum are some of the sound people I have met through it and also being able to discuss my enthusiasm for music with like minded souls, don't always agree but that's also fine, I've been switched onto some fine acts and albums and hopefully have done the same for others.

maybe to stop it being "400 songs with one vote each" you should select a shortlist and let people vote on that. I know some people will moan that their favourite isn't on the list but it will make for more meaningful results and also then will have the flavour of the Brit Awards. It can be called The Cravens and the statuette can be in the likeness of Victor Meldrew.
