Hellllpppppp!!!! Need advice on cab for a Tiny Terror!
Fri 15 Jan 2010 13:09
Hi Guys

Sorry to post again but advice needed . Have bought a orange tiny terror from rock and roll music in swindon . Wanted to buy the 1x12 cab from there but it was damaged and no box or manual and it was still down for 200 (there listed new on google for 186) . Turns out after weeks of waiting one from dv247 that there not getting stock till end of feb and most places online aren't getting them till feb as well .
So basically i'm hitting up you guys for a good sounding cab for under 200 , weather that be a 1x12 2x12 or a 4x12 that will voice the Tiny Terror well for Heavy Rock/Punk as i have no idea what speakers to look for!

Thanks Guys and Gals

I've got an Epiphone 1x12 cabinet that they made to go with the 5w valve amp. It's great, it's got a celestion speaker and is very well made by the Chinese. Pretty warm sound, nice and loud I've used it for plenty of gigs. I got mine for the stupidly cheap price of £70, here's a link to it for £110, but you might be able to pick one up cheaper.

Thanks for your suggestion dude

Does the epiphone valve junior bad suite that kind or orange rocky tone?

I'm sure it would. I actually use it with a Crate Powerblock, but I have used it with valve amp heads and it sounds pretty good and breaks up nicely when pushed. The speaker is designed for smaller wattage valve amps, so I'm sure it'd suit the tiny terror. I'd try and find one in a shop to try, I really don't think you'd be disappointed. Obviously a 1x12 doesn't have quite as much Woof as a 2x12, but but it's massively lighter and more convenient, and at 90% of gigs it'll have a mic in front of it anyway.

Another suggestion if you're feeling rich - the Oxford Guitar Gallery in Summertown. Beautifully hand made cabinets, and they sound awesome!

Personally, I'd wait for the Orange one. Super good quality and looks cool as fuck.

Is there nowhere else you can get one from?

I have allready done 2 practices with a battered 80's park solidstate thats on its last legs ,when i have my orange tiny terror sitting at home unused - Its so frustrating !

It's a bit more complex than just speakers, the size and design make a bit of difference, you could try various cabs all with Celestion V30's for example and sound a bit different.

If you're going for distorted rock sounds, your safest bet is Celestion Vintage 30's. If you can afford it/find it/put up with it, the Tiny Terror through an Orange 2x12 sounds brilliant, highly recommended you at least try it if possible.
As for only one speaker being miked up and anything beyond a 1x12 being a bit pointless, actually phase issues from the various speakers is part of the sound and you can't truly isolate a speaker when they are right next to each other and no partitions between them in and out of the cab.

That says it has an Eminence speaker. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing.

Anyone have any experience of Hayden Cabs ?

They do a 4x12 for the peacemaker that runs in either mono 16ohms or stereo 8ohms like the tiny terror and they rock 4 eminence red coat governors according to the website which according to another site is meant to compare favourably to the celestion vintage 30

I swear by celestions, I'd strongly recommend a cab with either a vintage 30 or G12H green for proper Orange rocky goodness! May be cheaper to get the epiphone cab, and buy one of the above speakers to replace the one in there. Voila! great, portable cab for under 200 nicker.

Jensen speakers are good too, bit cleaner though. Or if you can find a Fane 12" you could try that, super gritty aggressive treble on those...

Did these posts on forums mention which cab they were using and whether they were playing in bands?

The Tiny Terror might lack bass if you're using the 1x12 and playing in your bedroom, in a band you don't need it, unless you like sounding muddy of course.

Yeah, +1 to what Haze says. You have a bass for bass in a band! And I've never found a problem with the bass response from a 1X12" speaker or cab.

EL84 power tubes (like the ones in the Tiny Terror) have a *slightly* lighter bass response than say, a similar powered EL34 power amp. But that's only one tiny part of the picture! Guitar body wood, pickups, tuning, string gauge and speaker choice will all have more influence, and whether the cab is open or closed back will make a difference too. But dont get hung up on bass, all the best guitar tones on record are generally very bass light to cut through the mix. EL84 tubes have a strong upper midrange response and that's exactly what you need to sound great in a rock band! So dont worry about it. It'll sound bloody fantastic through the Orange cab ; )
