Acoustic Guitar through Valve Amp
does it work?
Mon 21 Dec 2009 14:25
Is it possible to play an acoustic guitar through an electric guitar valve amp in a live situation, we have tried it before but have experienced serious feedback.

I have a peavey delta blues 30W valve amp and my colleague has a Fender Deluxe 40 Watter. It would make life more simple if we could get it to work.

The answer is, yes you can! But you're going to have to get clever about it. Check out a guy called Martin Harley for inspiration.

If you keep the gain really low so that the amp is crystal clear then it should work. As soon as you nudge up the gain or hit a distortion pedal though you'll get horrendous uncontrollable feedback. Also, it won't sound much like an acoustic - the amp and speaker are voiced for an electric.

You can run anything you want through a guitar amp, just got to remember they are designed to make guitars sound nice, so the frequency response of the speakers is limited and all over the place, so you won't get that sparkly acoustic sound ever.

Anything with a hollow body will feedback more than a solid body guitar.
