Actually the label "world music" is a bit arrogant as well....where do they think the rest of the music comes from?

I'm not saying they shouldn't play black music on the radio, I think that the race of an artist shouldn't even be an issue. The fact that they single out a separate station just for a certain racial group is (to me anyway) quite racist.

Ah well there you go.

Personally I couldn't give a shit. I find the fact that BBC wastes money on s**t like 'Songs of Praise', groups of people sing to a mythical being, whilst not being a drama or documentary on the dangers of cults is more offensive than providing a DAB station to a group of people who actually exist.
I'd go as far as say that television shouldn't have any religious leanings, if religions were sexual orientations (insert your own priest jokes here) then the BBC should be A-sexual.

I find it funny they had an Evolution season on BBC4 (which is worth license fee alone) yet still show that antiquated crap.

I agree, though surely the fact that they show both the Evolution series and Songs of Praise portrays a certain degree of neutrality?

I think they might mean "world", with a silent "third"...

As someone wisely pointed out earlier radio/most media is mostly 'white' by its very nature due to the fact that..er..the majority of the population of Britain is white (something like 90% at the last census). Therefore it seems to me to be perfectly logical to have radio stations, tv stations, newspapers etc catering to minority audiences. That old argument about nobody having a white music of origin awards, a white history month blah blah blah doesnt cut it for me I'm afraid. Most of the world has been run/opressed by white people for the last two thousand years and THATS why its a good thing for minorities to be recognised in a predominantly white country. Yes its slightly uncomfortable for an outlet of media to be recognised by its colour and not its content but in the spirit of recognising diversity and opening minds, I think its fairly reasonable.

If we live in a society where true equality exists, then we shouldn't need separate media for different racial groups. Ethnicity is something that is just totally irrelevant, and therefore doesn't even need to be mentioned, in a 'modern' and 'civilised' world.

It's so hard to tell if people are being sarcastic on the internet.

Nah, its easy. If it has a smiley it means they dont mean it (a smiley means you can say absolutely anything you want without reason or comeback). If it doesnt have a smiley then they obviously 100% mean it in a "as read" way.
Seriously.

(should I put a smiley here?)

There's a forum I visit occasionally where smilies/emoticons aren't allowed and are filtered out when you post on it. It's a complete bitchfest 95% of the time. 8 )

i don't like the term "black" music, it suggests that black people don't do rock/punk etc and white people don't do soul/hip-hop etc. still, no worse than when the word "urban" was being bandied about (like punk or house music aren't urban sounds). i can understand the need to give a bit of space to hip-hop, soul and r'n'b that doesn't get coverage in the mainstream, but why not come up with a word that doesn't sound stupid, contradictory or divisive? surely can't be that hard.

the asian network is a misnomer too. does it include sounds from china? kazakhstan? saudi arabia? no, it's primarily stuff from india, pakistan and bangladesh. should be called the south asian network.

as for world music - what the f**k does that even mean? who uses that phrase? "this is good, what's this?" "oh, it's world music". it's like when people stick -tronica or -core on the end of descriptions of a music style to make it sound like they know what they're talking about. makes me cringe.

I'm going to start a funktronica band.
