also. i like a lot of the songs you guys don't. probably in the wrong forum. but as said a million times on here.. it's very one sided. i'm sure there's a billion other forums where people are asking similar questions about the music you guys listen to.

I don't think there's necessarily huge amounts of musical common ground on this forum, there's always a bit of banter about bands anyways, it's all part of the fun!

I really don't know much about these karaoke shows as they tend to make me a bit sick in my mouth, but still haven't forgiven that destruction of Hallelujah.

Why did you let them take it Cohen, why?!

I heard that Leonard Cohen had a new swimming pool built with some of the proceeds from Burke's cover of "Hallelujah"

Wasn't he left almost penniless by his dodgy accountant or something? I'm fairly sure this forced him to tour again in his 70's, after initially calling it a day. Maybe he needed the money.

100% with you. The X Factor is possibly the worst programme of all time. Smug, shallow and utterly devoid of any soul whatsoever. To quote Ricky Gervais in a scene from Extras:

"The Victorian freak show never went away; now it's called Big Brother or American Idol, where in the preliminary rounds we wheel out the bewildered to be sniggered at by multi-millionaires."

Fact.

What stuff has even been released this year?

I do find it insulting that the BBC has stations dedicated to Black & Asian music, where's the one purely for caucasian music?

Oh, sorry, that would be 'racist' wouldn't it 8 )

Radio 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are pretty much the whitest things on the planet. Heaven forbid that BBC should provide one digital station aimed at people who also fund them.

I can fully understand the need for the Asian network as the majority of the music played is not mainstream and would alienate the majority of Radio 1s daytime listeners, in exactly the same way as playing the punk show or the hardcore rave show in the day would go down like a lead balloon. I think the problem is that by naming it the "Asian" network people immediately assume its pandering to a minority rather than it being related to the music it played. Its more a case of bad marketing rather than anything else.
Again with the "Black" network, the issue is in the branding rather than the reasoning.

But what is 'black' music?

Possibly, but by stating that it's a "black" station singles out people based on race, which in my opinion is just wrong. I don't give three flying fucks who made the fucking music, just whether it's any good or not. By analyzing a station's playlist to check its ratio of 'black music' and 'white music', you're differentiating music based on colour.

What about bands like Bloc Party? Are they a 'black' band, or a 'white' band? Will 1 Xtra play them or not? If you have to make a decision based on race, rather than on the merit of their work, then that in itself is pretty racist.

When has 1xtra ever been billed as a "black station"? They have a few good shows on there Benji B seems to know what he's talking about and plays some interesting tunes. Isn't the musical remit of the show R&B, soul, garage, underground urban, hip hop and most that umbrella these genres? What's the fucking problem?

Who would listen to "White FM" or whatever it was called? That'd be ridiculous "Phat suburban flavours to read the Daily Mail to... Here's another track about immigrants and house prices from the Caucasian Pub Foundation"

I'm not saying they shouldn't play black music on the radio, I think that the race of an artist shouldn't even be an issue. The fact that they single out a separate station just for a certain racial group is (to me anyway) quite racist.
