Have we missed a trick?

Those bastard corporations, ruining our community and lives by putting on a large scale, free music festival in our town.

The backlash against the Big Weekend has amused me greatly too; if I had not got tickets I would still have maintained what a great thing it was for Swindon and shown the event the respect it deserves. All this "aww f**k Radio One, it's s**t anyway!!" nonsense is just embarrassing, and only serves to show that these people didn't even deserve a ticket in the first place. Children.

Bit aggressive, I wasn't being unfriendly.

I'd also be intrigued to know how you've managed to obtain information on how many gigs I've attended in my lifetime.

I'm more interested to learn that SBC managed to find 400k* to support this event. Let's hope they can invest the same next and every year, and offer the same terms and welcome to any (private) promoters who approach them. Better still, commit some hard funds to supporting grassroots local music - 400k could achieve rather a lot eh?

Eh?! My initial comment wasn't meant offensively in the slightest. Have to say, this is pretty immature behaviour from what I'm guessing is a man a good 15-20 years older than myself.

And what makes you think any one cares what gigs you've been to?

Glastonbury hosts (arguably) the most famous music festival in the world once a year but you don't very often hear people discussing how amazing the Glastonbury music scene is. The Big Weekend was never going to transform Swindon into a Liverpool, Manchester or London (or even Bristol or Oxford by itself.

OBW is hardly going to compare to the Sex Pistols in Manchester in '76 or kids buying synthesizers in Sheffield around the same time after hearing Kraftwerk. While the festival will have benefits for Swindon as a town, I seriously can't see how in 30 years time, we'll be remembering OBW for kick starting something big.

Having lived through my adult life mainly from salads, fruit and cold cuts, I hate the stereotypical hot dinners references.

(most of that is a lie, but I just wanted to inject a bit of disarming humour into the argument)

Lol Dave - In keeping with the injecting light humour into the argument theme, I doubt that argument would work with me either.

I'm 33 years old and I'm guessing I must have eaten an average of 1 hot dinner day during my life (at the very least). Often more (if you include cooked breakfast, burger for lunch and steak for dinner).

So this works out to (33 x 365) approx 12,045 hot dinners. Even the most avid gig-goer would struggle to attend that many, surely?

I think the only person you could really use that argument with would be Karen Carpenter.

slow day at work Mr Davis?

Just a thought , a couple of friends of mine were in a band called Lunch years ago...would watching them have counted as a gig or a dinner?
