After listening to the Prodigy's new album I'm in the mood for trying some new stuff on the keys. I'm getting quite into Electro, and wondered if anyone's got any good tips for some funky "rave" sounds? I've got a soundcard (which is currently out on loan) and wondered if there's anywhere I can download some onto my laptop and play through that. I play a Korg N1 by the way, if it makes a difference. Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

if you can get a copy of cubase or logic they have decent synth sounds built in that are fully adjustable.

Try the Arturia demos.

And the Cubase and Logic synths are good for sounding like everyone who has Cubase and Logic. Plus anyone with any sense in Electro uses Reason and Ableton Live.

I know some artists have used Reason to produce some commercial tracks, but I think this is the exception rather than the rule. Most electro musicians I know still sit down and construct tracks by hand in cakewalk/cubase/<insert sequencer of choice>. Whilst I've been told Ableton is good - I thought it was mostly a live 'DJ' style tool - great for dropping loops in/out for spontaneous live performances but not necessarily something you'd want to use in the studio.

Nowadays I use a sequencer and a bunch of soft synths.

That's just my 2p.

I recently got a job lot of the first 80 issues of "Computer Music" magazine for a tenner off Ebay (with all the cover discs included too) which I intend to start ploughing thru soon for inspiration... : )
