But you also, if i remember correctly, did them over a period of time so what you had was what you wanted and was also specific to you - you also had the time to evolve and understand what would be right for you.
That's true. They were done (and still are being done) over what is now a 20 year period. Other than the very first one, I've either designed them all from scratch or have modified other images (non-tattoo images) into designs I wanted.
None of them were done to 'fit' a band's image or to present a certain image in promo photos. In fact, other than when it's really hot, I rarely wear short sleeves. I couldn't give a s**t if they were never seen again by anyone - because they weren't done for other people.
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. How does a guy of 20 end up with virtually a full upper body sleeve? I'm sure some of them must be tattooists themselves, I just can't see how it'd be sensibly possible otherwise. The sheer amount of artwork necessary to cover that amount of skin must, in itself, take a while to get together - assuming it's good stuff that you truly like and has some meaning to you.
Although, to be fair, I've never been one of those people who believes a tattoo has to necessarily mean something. A great design is a great design, doesn't really matter if it doesn't particularly mean anything.
