Twitter starts making sense when you want to link and direct traffic to other pieces of writing, articles, blogs etc. Many writing sites that I post on have automatic links that tell people on twitter that you have updated or post new material. If you are a fan of certain writers/bloggers etc you can access their new material and communiques immediatley without wading through all the stuff you have already read. If you are using it just as a way to chat to mates then I think there are much better alternatives to twitter for that. Its really a way of updating people to your creative activites which is why so many writers use it.

Thats how I use it anyway, other opinions are most welcome. Is it any good as a PR tool for gigs and bands, that might be worth looking into.

So basically it's the easier alternative to RSS feeds then?

If I knew how they worked I would answer that. If this was University Challenge I would nominate colda. (me and technology is normally more like Universely Challenged!)

I thought it might be a good idea for people to keep track of everything going on with Swindon Music. Good topics/discussions, website developments, gig information. It's a nice little alternative to a blog which I wouldn't have enough time to update.

I think it is the perfect middle ground. It can alert people to new announcements and even advertise to new readers with out too much extra work on your part and thats what its all about.

Makes complete sense to me. Twitter is meant as a tool to get updates from people / subjects / environments you are involved in, rather than another internet chat tool - so Swindonmusic updates fits the bill perfectly.

It's worth being on Twitter just to get the updates from The Onion. Todays was a classic....

"Controversial Court Ruling Upholds Homosexual's Right To Prance Around Demanding Attention And Being A Drama Queen"

well it made me laugh. QIkipedia is also an interesting read.

As I am getting a bit more into using Twitter (mainly for driving traffic into recently written articles and picking up SEO tips from other bloggers) I have noticed something odd about the place. Where as the likes of mice pace, facebook and all its kin seem to be deminated by teens and twenty somethings, Twitter seems to be favoured by a slightly more mature set. I guess with gimmickry at a minimum and its succinct style it is actually a very concise communication tool. There is none of that virtual kiss-chasing that makes other sites feel like being on playround duty, just a good way of flagging up information.

I like.
