Oh good, it's nearly Christmas
The most overrated time of the year
Wed 26 Nov 2008 12:24
I used to love Christmas for me its never been about faith, its about the season, celebrating the winter, the festivities, and most of all my family. I hate the money side of Christmas but I love to give presents, find receiving gifts difficult, its more fun to give than receive. I think as my children have got older Christmas seems so much less fun, it seems far more materialstic too these days. I think I get dissapointed about Christmas time because I still have the notion of simplicity like in the film 'A Wonderful Life' still makes me cry EVERY time I watch it - its got to be my most favourite film ever. I think I would like to buy only one gift each this year, cook a homely family dinner, play board games and listen to music, sit and chat and cuddle on the sofa... watching the film I love so much!

So I guess I do like Christmas with its worts and all.

ps I love twinkly lights, mistletoe, chocolate and the smell of a roast : )

In the last few years, Xmas has come to mean just one thing to me and that's a brand spanking new Doctor Who mini movie on BBC1 at approx 7pm Xmas Night! It's always extra naff and cheesy too (good for pissing off the die-harders who refuse to accept that Tom Baker ever left) - bloody love it... :D

Secondly, I intend to attend the Vic's Xmas Quiz on Sunday 21st December and probably get very very drunk in the process.

Yeah, considering my hatred of Christmas, this will be the 4th year in a row I have hosted said quiz, it should be fun

I do indeed have a xmas song, Its called, "Oh no its christmas again". All about the bits i hate at xmas, just to cheer you all up here's the lyrics.

Woke up this morning, went into town,
saw lots of people, running around
heard some music, it was strange
Oh no its xmas again

Plastic snowmen, in the sky
fairy on the tree, wonders why
all these people, are going insane
Oh no its xmas again

Socks and aftershave, soap on a rope
for some of these people, there aint no hope
i'm just glad, i still got a brain
Oh no its xmas again

Its the time of year
that things get sold
i don't wanna know
i must be too old

Roy Wood & Wizzard, Slade & Mud
John & Yoko, fighting the flood
Cliff's new record, drives me insane
Oh no its xmas again

The sound of music, is on the screen
while people eat, its obscene
all these programmes, to numb your brain
Oh no its xmas again

I wrote it after one particularly shite xmas, in case you couldn't tell : )

I thought we (the Hamsters From Hell),were on for the xmas no.1 in 1997, we were told to expect it to be released on whatever label Motorhead were on, not sure whether it would have been us or Motorhead recording it, but Lemmy singing one of my songs on TOTP would have been ace.
Then Princess Di snuffed it, everyone lost their sense of humour, & we heard no more.

Anyway, anyone who wants to hear it, get your arses down the Queens Tap this Friday, its your only chance to hear it this year, unless you've got our 1993 album, "The Unwanted Xmas Gift" (available at all good car boot sales).

Nearly, although my status is rather more complex, my blood is a mix of irish and mercian which ended up in Worcestershire, but I was born in Birmingham to a banished (for the visible stage of pregnancy) daughter of a catholic family and adopted (long and weird story) by Brummies living on the Black Country side of the M5 and as such grew up as a Black Country boy (much to mum's frowns when not speaking as I 'should'). Our home town, Halesowen is also an odd place being situated on the outer borders of the Black County and is often debated as to belonging, certainly by means of it many mines and nail industry it holds a proud a rightful place in Black Country history but this is only recent and Halesowen is a big old place (bigger than Birmingham in the Doomsday Book) with lots of history and heritage, the Black Country dialect is very germanic in it's foundation and certainly different to Brummie speak. Back to me, I like to play both cards (and am indeed a Birmingham City supporter) but if I had to choose (and claiming Mercian/Irish blood was not an option) then I'm indeed a Black Country boy : )
