The "HOME" Studio..
Whats everyone got?
Tue 11 Nov 2008 22:28
As im eventually getting the gear together to make some tunes mess about with mates etc..

I'm planning on making a few purchases now ive been working!

Line 6 UX2.. and one of these bad boys.. the rv 6 studio package deal. click! one of my mates has this mic and its really good for a budget mic!

I'm going to use midi keyboard controller to program in drums and replace with real acoustic sounds

and probably will d.i bass.. and mic up guitar amp with said mic (guitar amp will be a 5w epiphone valve junior so not too loud for it i rekon : ) should get a nice room sound off it!)

any thoughts?

what do you have if you do stuff at home?

ive got a little set up at the mo which consits of a UX1 and a copy of cakewalk sonar 4

i do the majority (guitar, vocals, bass) through the toneport and use reason 3 to program drums, synths ect and they just import to sonar and play over the top.

also use a SM58 if you wanted to know :P

I'm using a M-Audio Firewire 410 into a Macbook Pro running both Logic and Pro Tools (though at present Pro Tools needs a £60 patch to work with Intel Macs), using a combination of line in and mic'd guitar and bass sounds, depending on what I'm aiming for and how much time I have available to record.

Generally Ill record the line signal of the guitar, and then use a plugin to get a 'general' sound, and then feed the clean sound into my amp at a later date and mic the amp up - especially for distortion. You can then get a nice blend of both mic'd and modelled sounds, though obviously depends on the track in question.

For monitoring I'm using Sennheiser headphones, mainly because I have no cash, secondly because I'd like to keep my neighbours happy when I'm mixing stuff at 3am. Want to invest in a nice condenser mic for vocals, but due to monetary restraints I'm stuck with an SM58, does the job for demos or maybe BVs, but will still need to go to the studio to record the lead vocals.

Drums I would also record at the studio and edit at home, but final mixes would always be done at the studio. My setup is a recording/editing place, not a mixing place.

I suffer not from this latency you speak of ; )

im on a 2.8ghz duo core 2 mac with 4gb ram/logic 8 so it's got enough steam in the in pipeline to push the zero's n one's through was more thinking about the device.. usb 2.0 can be a bit gay.. its yours firewire 800??

my budget for an audio interface (2 in..) is around £100.. i like the idea of the line 6 one because of all the software extras that come with it! (and vu meters.. because they are just fancy cool.)

Yeah, mine is firewire 800. There are usually some buffer settings you can tweak which should help.

Why do you need the extras on the line6? You have logic which can do all that and more...

mmmm can see your concern but i get absolutly no latency with my UX1 (even though line 6 monkey says my processor isn't good enough). Apparently they have a thing called "tone direct monitoring" which helps with latency issues. seems to work : )

also on a side note i tried recording with my Pod XT live and was getting so much latency sonar ended up crashing :s

Solution: don't use Sonar...

Be careful of the direct monitoring, you'll be listening to the signal before it goes to the computer, as opposed to the signal back from the computer. You could be clipping the computers IO without hearing it.

No really, if you're crashing because of lag, it may be time to upgrade to a better PC or a Mac ; )

yeah i know i kinda need an upgrade on my comp but ill have to make do until i have the money.

and as i was saying there is no lag when using the toneport only when i used my XT live (and has only ever crashed when using the XT). was just trying to make they point that the toneports are geared more towards low latancy recording.

You have too much money to spare... I am suspicious! ; )

well hopefully lag wont be a problem im running a 24" alu imac, 2.8ghz duo (the extreme one they did) 4gb ram. On logic 8 as it likes leopard and has some cool synth sounds (cheers matt!)

il see if i can get one at work they do an m-audio one but frankly im sold at the flashy lights and shiney knobs.

do you do all of your own recording haze?
