Being on the door for this one left me in prime position for my viewing pleasure. So the Jon Trowbridge band, Gaz Brookfield and Rats Ruined My Brain was the order of the day, and was delivered steaming hot and right on time.
First up was Gaz Brookfield. A man and his guitar is usually my favourite way of my going about live music, and Gaz didn't disappoint tonight. He's got some really nice original songs, and seems to play them with care and caution. His set doesn't quite command the immediate silence Matt Kilford's does, but it should. I think he's another local act that thrives on a good audience, and there simply wasn't enough of us, but he played a good set nonetheless. The only thing I didn't like, was the cover of Times Like These by the Foo Fighters, and that's not to say I didn't like the song, more the chorus I had a problem with. I wanted to see Gaz Brookfield play, not Dave Grohl, but credit where credit's due, he does a bloody good Foo Fighters impression. But overall, Gaz was great, and after the sad demise of Durera (who were amaazing at the shufle this year) I hope to see much more of him as a solo act. He's certainly got the talent to go places.
Next up was the Jon Trowbridge Band, never having seen them before, and hearing nothing but good things about them, I was intrigued to see this band play live. They describe themselves as bringing together 'rock, soul and pop in an attempt to bring a little balls to piano based music.' and for a fairly young band, only formed in March this year, they manage to pull it off quite convincingly. They sound a little bit like everyone, and not alot like anyone. There's something, and this might sound odd, listenable, about their music. There's only a handful of local acts I would happily choose to listen to outside their gigs and the Jon Trowbridge Band is one of them. They don't only play well; they're another testament to the standard of song writing in this town. And if you needed further persuasion, have a gander at this video to <a href="http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=311203 09" target="new">'Survive'</a>
And last up was Rats Ruined My Brain, a Swindon super group if you will. Featuring a cherry pick of the best musicians around in Swindon at the moment. They're a bit like every band I love, Les Savy Fav being their main influence. And much like a photographer previously mentioned here, I love this band as much for their music as I do their descriptions, they describe themselves as 'the innate rhythm of people with stuff on their minds' But when listening to Rats I’ve got little else on my mind apart from how good they are. Sam Bates and Al Bridges work well together on vocals and it doesn't hurt that the whole band knows their instruments like the back of their hands as well. Literally not a bad word to say about these boys. Thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more.
