New Manic Street Preachers album
Engineered by Steve Albini, Lyrics by Richey Edwards
Tue 4 Nov 2008 21:26
Now I gave up on the Manics after "Everything Must Go" back in 1996 and to be honest that was patchy (for me it was all about "Generation Terrorists" and "The Holy Bible", those early Heavenly Records EPs and some of "Gold Against The Soul"; ) however this looks interesting,

http://www.nme.com/news/manic-street-preachers/40841

Working with Steve Albini could be a smart move, the fact they have set music to the final lyrics written by Richey prior to him vanishing in 1995 could make for interesting listening, or it could be a last desperate act by a band well past it's sell by date?

Thoughts?

This may be very cynical of me but it sounds like a cash-in to me...

I know as the years have gone on they have got duller by the album, but they are still capable of writting a few blinders, hopefully with the ghost of Richie in the writting process there may be some hope for recapturing the earlier brilliance.

I agree with Rich (suprise) all you need to buy is the first three albums to really enjoy them. That said "If You Tolerate This" is still a blinder.

fingers crossed!

That Nymphs album is a cracker!! You will like it alot

Always riled me that Hole became so successful when Inger Lore was far madder and more talented

Perhaps, or then again it's taken the band this long to come to terms with the fact that their mate is unlikely to be found, I can't imagine how James, Nicky and Sean must feel regarding Richey's vanishing act, it's almost certain he is dead and yet they can't have closure because his body has never been found.

If my best mate vanished 13 1/2 years ago it'd probably take me a while to want to revisit his writings, I hope this is done in a tasteful way. One things for sure, the Manics were never the same band once Richey's car was found abandoned by the Seven Bridge.

And what I think is quite telling about the band is that 1/4 of all of the earnings to date are put into an account on Richies behalf, not many people would be that loyal.

Actually I saw Richie Edwards at the Furnace on friday...but it may have been Adam Luth in fake furs.

I absolutely love Generation Terrorists, they just went downhill quickly after that. I wish they'd stuck to the promise they made about making one album and splitting up. Instead they went on to making slippers and pipe rock with Everything Must Go and spawned all theses horiffic bands like Snow Patrol and Elbow.

The Nymphs had the right idea - they imploded after one glorious album ...

Although rather worryingly Inger is back with a completely new line up and is recording an album, not really The Nymphs without the other original memebers

Woah there! Guy Garvey and Elbow have far more integrity, talent and songwriting skill than the diabolical snooze rock of Snow Patrol, Keane and post-Richey Manics. They have just become more exposed and popular - that doesnt automatically make them dull - see any of their four albums for evidence!

I gotta stand up for Elbow as well, great band, real emotion, powerful songs. I shall have to make you a compilation of their stuff Mr Neil

Snow Patrol are shite though as are Keane : )

But lets face it, even when they were touring first time round could anyone name another member (and no, you arent allowed to go and look at the sleeve notes..)
As Kerrang would have said in the days when it was a credible magazine, the line up was Inger Lorre, Ken, Ken, Ken and Ken on drums.

Oh yeah, i better put a line about MSP seeing as thats the thread... my opinion is that they should have stopped after Generation Terrorists - and that should have been stripped down to a single album. One album full of the good songs. Then split. Before they became incredibly shit. Yes, Richie continued to write some great lyrics... they just werent contained within the songs that they promised they would write.
