a bit of sleaze rock thread
Wed 27 Jan 2010 09:49
The blurb:

"The last great rock 'n' roll memoir, Andy McCoy's autobiography covers the legendary guitarist's life and exploits from childhood through to the rekindling of his massively influential band, Hanoi Rocks, in the 2000s. McCoy helped introduced punk to Finland from an early age - and from their base in a Stockholm subway station Hanoi Rocks embarked on a wild death-defying jet-setting thrill ride. Includes dozens of rare, candid photos and a new preface written by McCoy in 2009 after the final breakup of Hanoi Rocks."

That could really make for some interesting reading!!! I wonder if it will hint at any of the excesses they undertook - oh hang on, if it didnt then it would just be an A4 flyer!!!!

Gotta report that the Andy McCoy book wasn't great - a bit thin on the ground really. 'Last great rock & roll memoir' - hardly.

Shame.

Thats surprising, listen to him speak you would expect him to have crystal clear memory of everything he has ever done!
Maybe the title was a mistranslation and should have been "Rock and roll killed the last of my memory".

One thing Andy McCoy does mention is a book by Alvin Gibbs about the tour they both did as part of Iggy's band in the late 80s. Picked up a copy and started reading it this morning - have probably learnt more about McCoy already than from the whole of his own book!

Been checking out Lords of The New Church back catelogue on Youtube, for research purposes, this weekend and two things struck me.

1. Stiv Bators was a really ugly fucker

2. they made some fantastic music

thoughts?

Lords of The New Church should've sold a damn sight more records than they did, does baffle me that the likes of "New Church" "Russian Roulette" "Dance With Me" weren't top 20 hit singles, the best they managed was a top 100 placing for their cover of Madonna's "Like A Virgin"

Stiv was a very cool F**ker but was a bit ugly....

They were cool as it gets. Live footage of them is brilliant as Stiv was always absolutely wrecked!
I used to have this really cool pic of Stiv, Mike Monroe, Johnny Thunders and Mr Ramone all in the studio together... I wonder if Mike started shitting his pants as time went on!!

And the usual adage applies that the best chart placing they got was for something that must have been recorded as a joke. What I liked about their stuff was even though they were always seen as a bit of a goth/punk supergroup their stuff was very accesible and reasonably chart friendly. Dance With Me and Russian Roulette could have easily slotted into an eighties edition of TOTP.

Should make the effort to re-listen to the Lords - can't play my old vinyl though and the albums on CD were deleted and horrendously expensive the last time I checked.

Also of note are Stiv's Disconnected and also the Wanderers album Only Lovers Left Alive, which first brought Stiv & Dave Tregunna together in 1980 and was a pretty good indicator of what was to follow (with a pointless cover of 'Times They Are A-Changing' thrown in).

Used to have the album with Cold Outside on....LA Confidential? remember that being not a bad spin. Wonder what happened to that.

It's on my Disconnected CD, as a bonus track. So could well have been on LA Confidential.
