The "Jonathon Ross and Russell Brand go too far" thread
deeply offensive or storm in a teacup?!

The whole sorry event is now on youtube, and this, combined with the fact that everyone seems to be falling over themselves in a competition to see who can be the most outraged, actually means that the whole country now knows all about this rather than the couple of hundred thousand that probably heard the show.

I don't have a great deal of respect for Jonathon Ross, who used to find funny but now don't listen to or watch often. On his TV show a while back, he asked a rather shocked and embarassed Michael Aspel whether he "fucked" a Miss World entrant, and this is yet another example of him crossing the line between being rude to be funny and just being rude for the shock factor. I do like Russell Brand, but he constantly treads a fine line between witty self-deprecation and smug self-absorbsion. To boast about who you've slept with on a radio show is pretty tragic anyhow. It was obviously a joke that simply got out of hand, but as professional comedians and presenters they whould know better.

What is arguably rather ironic however is that Sach's granddaughter, Georgina Baillie is a burlesque dancer called Voluptua in a dance group called the Satanic Sluts, and you can easily find her myspace, featuring a picture of her cage dancing with the caption "Look Daddy, the private school education paid off!!!" This does kind of work against her a little when she's claiming that Brand and Ross have damaged her reputation. And of course the newspapers are falling over themselves to condemn Ross and Brand, while at the same time printing as many provacative pictures of Gerogina Baillie as possible. Funny world we live in...

Basically we are talking about three people who to one degree or another make living out of being "outrageous". It may give the "outraged of Aldershot" something to flap about, but are we surprised? Do we really care? Was anyone hurt?...well maybe Andrew Sachs but then he used to take a beating from Basil Fawlty so I bet he's had worse days.

Newspaper spin and very little else.

"celebrities"...I hate them.

I hate Russel Brand anyway. His "STAND UP" if you can call it that is nothing short of retarded shite, so, with a bit of luck it will get his stupid, zero talent, face off the TV.

I can understand Alexander Armstrong’s comment on this that when recording shows all manner of inappropriate material gets stumbled upon by comics trying things out and ad-libbing when that is the kind of show – so I get that judgement can wander a bit in that scenario. Even allowing for that, and even if they assumed it would not go out, continually phoning him up when that live aspect can’t be undone was just stupid. Not worthy of the current furore, but stupid.

But to broadcast it later (even AFTER Sachs himself had already complained) is almost impossible for me to understand.

Given the state of this country at the moment, I literally cannot believe that Gordon Brown has decided to weigh in on this and use his time and resouces to 'force' the BBC to do something. I cannot (well, I can) believe he has used this non-story to hijack media attention away from the state of the nation.

A mildly distasteful answerphone message that wasn't even live and had already been apolgised for gets more media attention than the fact that home repossessions in the UK are up by 71% on this time last year and hundreds of people dying in an earthquake in Pakistan?!?

10,000 people 'complained'? Why do I get the feeling that they've feverishly searched online to find it on You Tube specifically so that they can listen to it and deliberately be 'offended'?

In any case, doesn't Brand's show get around 2m listeners? That means 99.5% of them didn't complain.

What a complete fucking farce.

And to make it even more laughable, expect Georgina Baille to now get her tits out in every lad's mag going over the next month - and to earn a small fortune out of the very incident she's so quick to moan about.

i remember thinking it was very funny.

turn up for your radio interviews in future i guess was the lesson.

bit overly harsh, but hardly suspension worthy, or headline news worthy.

Personally, this has nothing to do with me so I couldnt give a pigs fucking ear about it, but, and this is the point I think, imagine this scenario:-

Your grandfather gets a message like this from a couple of fuckwits and some of the stuff they are saying is about your sister shagging someone that you dont really like. It upsets your grandfather and most definatly upsets your sister - what would you do or like to do about it?

Or do you just say "well, thats okay isnt it, do it some more."

Apologies, f**k that, those same people I am mentioning would only apologise for doing it if they knew something bad was going to happen, and in Brand's case I fucking hope it does.

He's a little fuckweed and I hate everything the little ponce stands for, he can only get laughs by taking the piss out of people.... funny, maybe to some of you until it happens to be you that he's doing it to or one of your family members

This episode just sums up the sheep-like idiocy of Daily Mail / Mail on Sunday readers... They believe everything printed, even so far as to make complaints about something they never originally heard! 8 )

While I'm not commenting on the actual event, things like this appear in all various forms of media everyday (hence very little initial complaints), and backs up what I said at the beginning of the month...

Reply to Post 30793 by Paj in US Election Totally, the most powerful people in the world now are the owners of the major media outlets - they can sway the average public's opinion on any subject depending on how they report it, and if someone crosses them they can destroy their character in a matter of weeks; hence why in the last decade jobs in PR and spin doctoring have rocketed.

Gotta agree. I just fucking hate Russel Brand, he isnt even funny, not in the slightest.

I like Jonathan Ross and the fact that he apologised before this even went on air says something.

Brand can just go and kill himself for all I care

I didn't find it funny, its something 12 years olds do huddled round the phone laughing at saying swear words at a pensioner. To be honest if you are in the public eye you expect to have rise taken out of you at some point but it was particularly nasty what they did.
The problem lies with the producer and editor of the programme, they see fit to take out some material where Ross and Brand offered sexual services to Andrew Sachs as a form of apology and mooted the idea of breaking into his house but why didn't they think "hmm Mr Sachs has already complained and the presenters themselves know they are pushing it, lets not air this". So yes the Talent should take some blame and have a knuckle wrapping over it, but also the production team should have equal blame as they had the power to stop it being broadcast in the first place.

Now we have a deliberate storm stirred up the Red Tops so they can shift some more of their attempts at journalism which in turn has mobilised a whole army of people who have never listened to the show or ever will to complain about it. Its quite telling how through media the public can be manipulated, in fact Noam Chomsky wrote a good book about the power of the mass media called 'Media Control' and its worth a read as it hits the nail on the head.

Russell Brand is one of the most overrated entertainers around, to put it bluntly I think he's a twat, Wossy used to annoy me, then I warmed to him, now he's acted like a bit of dick.

But as Mr 20 Eyes said, surely there are more important matters taking place around the world at the moment than this? I'm not condoning what's happened here but I just find it interesting that the press have given it so much attention. It's also a sad reflection on this country that hoards of knuckle dragging, neandertal Sun readers are up in arms over something they probably didn't even hear, cue more publicity for all concerned.

Still, not all bad news, the suspension of the Jonathan Ross show this week spares us having to sit through The Killers performing their diabolical new single : )

I like the fact there are now 30,000 complaints - but only 2 (yes, 2... ) were recieved when the actual show aired. So 29,998 people are incensed because the mirror or sun told them they should be.
