Description

JAMES YORKSTON
"A thousand times more haunting than anything the New Acoustic Movement ever dreamed of" said the NME. Indeed Scottish musician James Yorkston's music is haunting, but there is something else in his music which lifts him above the average acoustic singer/songwriter. At times he sounds like a rat-pack crooner, the next like a scottish balladeer, and just when he's got down to his quietest, most fragile moment he'll break into one of the loudest acoustic guitar intervals you're likely to hear. James Yorkston is diversity at it's best, with all the quality of tradition and excitement of the new.

PICTISH TRAIL
Experimental folk-pop from one-man band Pictish Trail, aka Johnny Lynch. Fusing home-made electronica with DIY instrumentation, Pictish Trail's music is simple, sweet and instantly seductive. ' this is the sound of Scotland quietly floating far, far out to some deep enchanting waters. And never dreaming of floating back.' - Domino

Got his album and it's excellent. Sort of Sigur Ros meets John Martyn with some Ivor Cutler sprinkled in for good measure (or something like that).

Anyone know if he's solo, or with a band on Monday night? Going anyway, but interested to know what to expect.

he's solo but supported by Pictish Trail and Rozi Plain and I think they all join him for a Fence Collective combo effort towards end of JY set.

I've seen Rozi Plain play down in Bristol & she's really good. Slightly quirky.

Really enjoyed this - quality show and good to see the benchmark standards being raised for what many local singery songwritery types might want to aspire to. The show was well attended for a cold Monday night, with many out of towners apparently making the trip. Shame there wasn't any seating as it was definitely that sort of gig.

Best bits:

Rozi Plain screwing up her Nick Drake style tuning before even beginning her final number and consequently excusing herself from the stage.

Yorkston responding to a sneeze with a wry smile and a polite 'bless you' between the lines he was singing. Class.

The performers going totally acoustic at the end - no mics, or amplified guitar. and still holding the room. A clever trick and reminding the audience that this WAS acoustic music.

Funniest comment of the night - a couple of young-uns leaving early: "We're off - this too much like Maudlin Jazz"

I'm not quite sure what Maudlin Jazz actually is, but for me it made for an intriguing and classy evening's entertainment. Cultural desert my arse!

Was gutted I couldn't make this, as it sounded right up my alley. Alas, being completely unprepared meant I'm still writing the show for Thursday.

I love it when performers are confident enough to go totally acoustic. Peter Katz did it last time he was here.

Wishhounds lot - check out Peter Katz from Canada and see when he's touring the UK again. Well worth a investment, and good luck for the cumming shows.

For anyone who missed this gig, or went & enjoyed it, James Yorkston, Pictish Trail & Rozi Plain were on the Culture Show last Friday. The show is available on iPlayer until Saturday.
Episode 16 is the one you want; Pictish Trail plays at the start of the show and James Yorkston at the end (just after 40 minutes in). There's an interview with Yorkston, Pictish Trail & King Creosote at the 36 minute mark.
King Creosote is playing at the 12 Bar next February.
