Worst thing for me is when they say things like: "I've always wanted to be a singer" - well fucking sing then! Nobody's stopping you...oh wait, you want the fame? My mistake.

Sad, sad bastards.

The show was created solely to make money by gaining large viewing figures.

They're now in their fifth season, which is the highest rated show on ITV other than Coronation Street (which I believe it actually beat a couple of weeks ago) and Leona Lewis had the two top selling singles of recent years and one of the best selling albums by a UK artist in the world.

I'd say they're probably not overly bothered that some people don't like it.

As these types of shows go, I think it's actually one of the better ones. The one I really don't get is Strictly Come Dancing - it's like they just put a couple of cameras in a Butlins entertainment bar on a Saturday night.

i am going to be interested to hear Leon Jacksons new tune on saturday on the live show!! i wasnt keen on him winning last year at all and i dont believe he will do all that well to be honest, too many people trying to get on the Michael Buble bandwagon i think these days and theres only one Michael Buble!

I bought tickets to the X Factor live show as a Christmas present last year - it was actually a really well presented show and most of the acts were fairly impressive. However, it was clearly noticeable that a significant amount of people left after Rhydian and before Leon Jackson came on.

IMO, he won on the strength of the block Scottish vote. I can't see his album doing well at all.

I was totally shocked at Rhydian not winning! and yeah I guess the whole of scotland voted for leon and his little sob story and his crying (ooh Austen springs to mind now!)! there were far too many sob storys this year as far as i was concerned, however i still am a fan and will always watch it!!! There goes my satursday nights for the next few months!!!

X Factor "stars" are no different to the one-hit pop wonders of the 80's and 90's, it's just they've found a format that works for the 21st Century, where pop fans are bought in by the more interactive approach (ie: they've turned the art of a fan discovering a new band before they make it big into a Saturday evening couch potato activity!)

A lot of the population will always want this type of music, so I say fair play to them - my only problem with the show is they've destroyed the classic Xmas No 1 single race by timing the end of the show and the first single release for that week. Artists no longer bother to record proper Xmas singles.

Agreed.

I also agree with your other comment - there are plenty of people who like to hear different singers performing covers and the odd original tune now and again. The whole idea of X Factor, from the show itself to the music and performers, is that it's popular entertainment.

Nobody, least of all the likes of Simon Cowell, has ever said they want to change the world through music (in fact, in this season they actually raised eyebrows when a hopeful said that's what they wanted to do), they just want to sell records, make money and along the way entertain a few million people.

I suppose the only thing I'd like to see would be a little more variety in the songs that the performers are give to sing. I know it's as much about the voters knowing the songs as much as it is how they're delivered, but I can't help thinking they neglect to use some stuff that would be much more interesting but a little bit less obvious.
