Pitch Shifters?
Fri 12 Sep 2008 11:08
I've been thinking of getting a pitch shifter for a while now. Just something I can play around with and make some wierd and wonderful sounds. Now I'm getting back in the band game it might be time I got one.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I had a look at the Boss PS-5 and it doesn't look too bad. Allows you to do things like detuning, divebombs, quick & easy harmonies etc and as far as I think you can use an expression pedal with it too for a bit more control. You can get it for about £115 which isn't bad for what it can do

Does anybody know of any alternatives I'd be better suited with or any recommendations?

you can buy a digitech whammy from GAK for nearly the same price as a PS-5 and it has the expression pedal built in.

if you want a decent pitchshifter, the electro harmonix HOG is rather good, the whammy and the boss ones aren't really all great, you buy those for the flaws as the mash up of notes when you try playing chords into them is beautiful, lower the volume going in and it all gets rather sketchy ^_^

are you taking about thi s? Looks a bit pricey to me! I was looking at the whammy and it doesn't look like it does as much function wise as the boss. Have you got/used one?

Thing is, I don't really see myself using the harmony mode for more than one string so I'm not sure if that's too much of a worry to me

the digitech is a much simpler package, the boss extra modes, but none are anything i'd use, or could find something far better at it.

i have a whammy and an older boss pitchshifter. i'd happily replace them with a HOG anyday, but yeah, it's pricey, but at least it comes with an expression pedal, unlike the boss and does stuff neither pedal can.

i think if you are after harmony, the boss might be pedal, if you want pitchshifting, the whammy is definately better.

I've got a pretty old zoom multieffects unit that has an expression pedal built in, and it does a pretty ace pitch shift. Combined with some delay and some singing feedback it's great for weird noises. Probably not as good as a dedicated pitch shift, but you could probably pick one up for peanuts!
