Swindon - Bristols Ugly Sister?
Mon 7 Jul 2008 15:28
What do you reckon? I was just thinking about this, there's so much more that goes on in Bristol every week (not just restricted to Music, I mean the arts, culture) and we're stuck here with a town of theme pubs and low-attendances

Where's it all going wrong?! Are we Bristol's ugly sister?

But you have to look at the history of these places. Bristol has been an important place since medieval times, one of the major trade centres of Europe and acrewed vast wealth during the Renaissance into Georgian times. It still has a massive collateral and invested wealth due to its trade and money always attracts affluency and culture.

Swindon on the other hand only achieved significancy with the railways in the late nineteenth century. A century later that business was nationalised and bankrupt. No money means no influx of the wealthy and no cultural investment.

In many ways we are 500 years behind Bristol and a similar arguement can be made for Oxford on grounds of learning.

No, not even close!

There are plenty of other towns that could be considered their ugly sister, but not swindon - we're closer to london arnt we?

Handy for the commuters. We have bits of culture here and there. No 'arts' centre, no museum of much worth. Steam is pretty cool though. Got to make the best of what we've got I guess. Made lots of links this past year with Bristol and Leicester bands. So there is some exchanges going on. Can't speak on the arts front though. I personally would like to see more art, even a passing exhibition would be nice.

the place to find out just how little we actually do as a band

Swindon isn't even Bristol's retarded little cousin.

What's so sad about this town is that it will soon hit a population of over 200,000 and be over a quarter of a million within three years. For it's size, it's actually now quite a laughable place in most respects.

I think Bristol would flat out deny being related at all, if anything Swindon is Bristol's elderly diasbled aunt, who weareth a piss-bag.

There isn't a sentence you've said on this forum that I disagree with. It needs an injection of culture. Give people who dont live in Swindon a reason to come here. (Other than to point and laugh)

As a relative outsider (I've lived here for about 5 years) I'll tell you what I have found to be the worst thing about Swindon, and the one most worth laughing at. The people who live here who CONSTANTLY talk about how s**t it is.

If you dislike it so much - Leave.

Before moving here I lived in Sheffield (and have lived in a few places prior to that including small towns, villages etc). Many people would probably say that Sheffield and Bristol are quite similar in terms of size and amenities and cultural venues etc...and I'd agree.

I loved living in Sheffield, it's a great place.

But do you know what? It had some really really s**t stuff about it too.

Of course the likes of Sheffield and Bristol have more "stuff" - they are cities, they have universities etc...So yes, they have more of the good stuff...

But they also have more of the s**t stuff.

It's all relative.

I like it so much, I've bought a house here, and don't plan on leaving. I've made fantastic friends here, love the friendly local music scene, the pubs I regularly go in, the fact I am only ever a twenty minute drive from some amazing countryside, there are plenty of shops (not that I'm much of a shopper, it's commutable to loads of places, the crime rate is still relatively low....

Seriously, all those people who I just moan on and on and on about what a shithole this is. Have you ever lived anywhere else? If so, why did you come back if it's so shit? If not, I suggest you do...and I hope you find what you're looking for elsewhere, but I have a funny feeling that the novelty of ANY place will wear off after a while.

Everywhere has it good bits and s**t bits, ultimately a place is what YOU make of it.

So there.

Indeed I did - now live in London, much better. Not a novelty. Wont wear off. It's actually got things to do and places to see. You're right, towns and cities have their pros and cons but swindon has minimal pros. I'd argue none at all. A place is indeed what you make it but with no tools or support from an elderly oblivious council, no making can be done. Unfortunately the majority of the demographic of Swindon is culturally apathetic white-van man, who drink "wife-beater". Someone I know had to move to Swindon from Bristol with work. She was APALLED at the lack of culture or things to do. No cute little bars, trinket shops, venues nice restaurants or cafes, just the Designer Village - PLEASE. Since when has Next or Nike been designer? Town - beyond dingy now and feels unsafe at 3pm on a Saturday. One bowling alley and an ice rink? Are we all 12 year old girls? The public transport system is a joke given the outrageous prices and complete inability to keep to a timetable. Swindon is an absolute dump which frankly needs rescuing now. Its a big operation but if it doesnt happen Swindon will become the biggest village ever known.
