Well last I heard, there's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis. I would check the validity of this statement with Kirsty MacColl, were it not also for the fact that she's dead.

What! Kirsty MacColl is dead too?

On a more serious note. I agree with what Si has said. However, are MECA ever going to put someone on who is current? Or at least someone my kids may have heard of?

Unlikely sir, expect more bands minus most of the original members, tribute acts and washed up hasbeens

what a wasted opportunity

Reply to Post 81408 by SI_1 in Toploader at the MECA but a leg on next years Rivival tour, would be the stuff of dreams, but would be too much to hope for.

That would be fucking amazing.......we can but dream

and fair play to you, I fully support the fact that local bands get the chance to support bigger names and play larger stages, that's definitely a good thing, just a shame that the "big" names headlining are shite like TopLoader

The answer to that question also includes the main problem they face:

Anyone who currently does Academy tours.

would have to disagree with that, I think for the size of the town it does alright. The problem is that it's too condensed into too few venues. The MECA seems to have settled for the scraps from the big boys table, the 12 Bar seems to have sunk without trace (there is still nothing on their website to indicate anything has been booked yet) The Rolly has become the home of the same twenty bands, mainly covers. If all that started heading into more imaginative waters then we would really have the start of something, but there are some interesting bands starting to filter through even so.

It's not mainly covers - that's just the blinkered perception of the place that keeps getting bandied round here. It's always been an approx. 50/50 split between those and originals bands/artists and I don't see anything wrong with that.
