Anyone Can Play Guitar
A new music documentary well worth seeing
Tue 3 Jan 2012 18:25
Anyone who is a fan of local music scenes will enjoy this film, it's about the Oxford music scene over the past 25 years and is the work of a bloke called Jon Spira who has worked tirelessly over the past few years putting this together, the film is entirely funded by donations, it's a well put together documentary, even if you've never set foot in Oxford there's plenty to recommend it.

It looks at the bands from the Oxford scene who have made it (Radiohead, Supergrass, Ride, Foals) some of those who didn't (The Candyskins, Swervedriver).

It's funny, it's heartfelt, it's informative.

So then, how about a documentary on the Swindon Music Scene, I reckon there's a tale to be told there.

I had an idea 12 months ago "From The Empire.... To The MECA" but then the MECA has been a bit of a damp fart so I gave up on it.

Definitely a tale though, memories of the Empire at the start of the 1900's, post-war Jazz bands in Swindon, McIlroys Ballroom (and the Beatles, Stones etc) the New Yorker Discotheque (Syd era Pink Floyd) the Salted Lime club nr Regent Circus.

The punk explosion, Drive Studios

The rise of XTC, all those Swindon bands of yesteryear.

I actually think it'd make a great story, Doza could do the voiceover

: )

The guys at Swindon Viewpoint would probably have loads of archive footage that could be used, probably a nice little project for any budding filmmakers/editors out there.
