To their fans, Fugazi are considered to be one of the most important and uncompromising bands of the past 30 years, influencing acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Strokes and The Killers.

But the group became known as much for their alternative stance towards the music industry as their post-hardcore music - the members of Fugazi have always been dedicated to keeping concert admission fees as low as possible and don't sell merchandise while touring.

They've played over 1000 concerts since forming in Washington DC in 1987, over 800 of which were recorded by their sound engineers. Now, despite being on an indefinite musical hiatus since 2003, the band continues to work together on the Fugazi Live Series archive project.

The goal of the project is to make that huge catalogue of recordings available to download, for a small fee. The BBC caught up with the band's guitarist and vocalist, Ian MacKaye, to find out why they are making this foray onto the web

Fair enough, and it's a cool project, but who really wants to hear 800 versions of the same 30 or so songs?

Assuming an average 60min set, it'd take 100 working days to listen to all of the shows.

Really?

Fair point, but I think you're missing the idea slightly - I think it's a way for you to download your fave Fugazi gig for memory's sake, or a way of new fans to "experience" them live (I know a few mates who saw them and judging by their reviews, I will be downloading those shows!). I don't think anyone is reasonably expecting people to listen to all of it. It's an archive.

Yeah, I totally agree - and do get the idea behind it - but, let's face it, no matter who you are, out of 800 shows there are going to be a fair few that were s**t : )

I love their attitude... warts n all. Love it. I've seen them live many times during the late 80's and easrly 90's. I shall be trawling through the archives, both music and pics, to download the shows (if available) I was at. Brilliant

For some reason I was really late and slow getting into them, but when it clicked I loved them. I remember buying The Augument Arthur time and loving it, but I've never sew them live : (
