Anybody using an iPod Touch or iPad for music?
Fri 21 Oct 2011 22:56
Anyone else using an iOS device for music production? I've been using an a M Audio Midi keyboard and a iPod Touch. Just bought SampleTank for iPhone and was blown away! I ordered the iRig Midi too for 48 more sounds too! Can't wait to use this live!

How are you using your iPhone or iPod for music?

Can't work out if this is spam, but it interests me anyway! I just got Animoog for the iPad. It's brilliant! Seriously nasty synth. I also use GarageBand for demos and AX7 core to turn my iPad into a Logic control surface. Love it!

Does sound like trolling...

I would love to get into this more, I've become some what behind on new digital equipment. EMS still use analogue for everything.

Is there anything Sam you would suggest for an engineer to use in a live situation?

Depends on the situation tbh. A decent digital desk with full recall is an amazing thing - set up each band's levels during soundcheck, and save to a patch to just instantly recall as they play! No more bloody beer-stained recall sheets.
As for iPad, plenty of imaginative midi control apps available so in theory, you could hook up to a lighting desk and do some insane light shows...

Think I need an iPad...

A engineer friend of mine has a frequency response thing on his iPod, which shows decibels and full spectrum frequencies in real time.

Thing is I have a decibel monitor and you shouldn't really need a computer to tell you what you need to know about the frequencies you can hear. So I'm not 100% sure whether there is anything worth me investing in...

Re: Digital desk - I had my first experience when JPL's enginer, a chap called Adie from Oxford turned up with one, they are amazing. Built in gates and compression etc with the flying faders - which I had only seen previously in a recording studio. He reckoned you can pick them up second hand for about 300, but I've never checked

Well the trouble with using freq analysis live is that it only analyses the signal passing through it. In a studio this is no biggie as the mix space is usually treated to be as flat as possible - not so with the majority of venues... So your analyser may be telling you that you need a cut at 400Hz, but Iain reality you have a bad room node at 200 that's muddying everything up! Like you say, use your ears, invest time in some EQ training if you are unsure.

....but yeah, iPad is still damn cool! I love mine.

as well as stored EQ and effect presets, either for use as is or as starting points. or indeed for live use save your starting EQ settings per venue. I went to a (basic) digital setup and once you do you relaise the possibilities are fantastic. Would love a higher-end one (eg digital gain stage per channel) - I used one at an event and was smitten (and barely scratched the surface of what it could do)
